The Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) has an annual bidding round for single academies, small multi- academy trusts and sixth form colleges, to apply for grant funding to support with improving the conditions of their facilities and ensuring that buildings are safe and fit for purpose. This funding is available annually and bids are submitted between October-December. The CIF has previously addressed numerous health and safety issues in various academies and sixth form colleges throughout England.
The Condition Improvement Fund 2019-20 provided £514 million funding to projects at over a thousand academies and sixth forms last year. This included £38 million in specific projects that were supported by the Healthy Pupils Capital Fund (HPCF) which focused on improving children and young people’s physical and mental health by increasing and developing the access and capabilities of relevant facilities.
The most common CIF projects from last year’s bidding round were to improve roofing, fire safety, windows and heating. In total, 14% went towards the replacement, refurbishment or repairs of roofing at various facilities and 8.4% focused on fire safety, ensuring that the buildings have adequate fire alarm systems in place to maximise safety. With 5% of bids being used to replace or upgrade windows. Other projects included work on doors, plumbing, electricity and the removal of asbestos.
Despite these areas being most common, these are not the only areas that your project can include. The DfE outlines all areas and the levels of priority, in their CIF document. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/condition-improvement-fund
